The 3rd Edition of Mark and Becky (Rebecca) Molina's Freestyle Canoeing: A Reference Guide to Advanced Solo Technique is copyrighted 1999

The foreward mentions "over 15 years of involvement in the discipline" and notes that the text is written for "paddlers who have a solid foundation in bsaic solo boat control". Mark Molina is introduced as "a two-time gold medalist in North American Interpretive Freestyle Competition and recipient of the American Canoe Association President's Award, is a much sought instructor and speaker at paddling events throughout the US and Canada". Becky Molina is introduced as "widely known in the paddling community for her expertise in teaching canoeing to children". Both were, at the time of publication, ACA Instructor Trainer Educators.

Their better known publication is their video: "Paddles in the Stream: An Introduction to Advanced Quietwater Technique for the Solo Canoeist".

The text kicks off with a 1/2 page introduction entitled "What is Freestyle Canoeing". We see the now-familiar definition as "the art and science of paddling" and mention of "efficiency" and "precision", but ultimately, we find Freestyle introduced as "an amalgam of techniques that helps the paddler utilize body, boat, and paddle in harmony to achieve exacting results".

Pages 2-28 are devoted to "A Glossary of Frequently Used Terms and Concepts"...

  • Angle of Attack
  • Backface
  • Canoe
  • Choking Up
  • Control Hand
  • Control Thumb
  • Hand Positions
  • Heeling
  • Heeling and Kneeling
  • Heeling Exercises
  • Interpretive Program
  • Knee Pad
  • Kneeling
  • Kneeling Positions
  • Maneuvre
  • Onside/Offside
  • Paddle
  • Palm Roll
  • Pitch (related to blade angle)
  • Pitch (related to boat trim)
  • Pivot Point
  • Powerface
  • Quadrant Organisation
  • Slice
  • Static Placement
  • Vertical Blade

This is followed by an "Illustrated Chart of Advanced Quietwater (Freestyle) Maneuvres": basically a series of quick reference sheets for each manoeuvre. These are arranged by quadrant (forward, reverse, cross forward, cross reverse) and in a standard order: axle, post, christie, wedge, shift. The forward and reverse freespin are included without cross / offside equivalents.

Each reference sheet indicates options for initiation (e.g. "Hard C or J") and conclusion (e.g. "bow draw", and specifies the required heel and pitch as well as the "boat movement"... and each manoeuvre is illustrated with a line drawing and photographs. All diagrams and photographs assume the paddler's "onside" is to his/her right.

A "quick reference chart" concludes this section of the book.
