Drilling holes in the water...

ACA-AQ Extras: 1 - Introduction

ACA Advanced Quietwater Canoeing is introduced here, where the following definition is offered:

ACA-AQ ("Advanced Quietwater" or "Freestyle") canoeing is an American Canoe Association canoe-touring programme which places an emphasis on optimised bio-mechanics to improve power and endurance and "that takes advantage of advanced whitewater skills, ie boat heel and pitch [to improve hydrodynamics], cross and reverse strokes and complex man[o]euvers [with a distinct initiation, placement and conclusion] to have more boat control, hence fun, on flat and moving water".

The history is discussed in a series of threads starting here, but as noted elsewhere:

The coaching programme centres on named manoeuvers: test pieces specified by paddle placement, direction of heel and outcome. How heel and pitch are established and forms of initiation and conclusion are up to individual paddlers. For modelling purposes (when coaching), heel might be to the rail and pitch might be quite pronounced, but as a canoe touring discipline, advocates will recommend that heel and pitch be "as appropriate for the conditions".

This Single Blade Wiki contains two systematic guides to advanced quietwater / freestyle canoeing:

For more mainstream advanced quietwater paddling see the ACA-AQ Basics Wiki.

This "Extras" Wiki is located within the "Stylised Freestyle" Wiki as it considers ways of extending Advanced Paddling technique well beyond the limits of the merely functional. It starts with this introduction and then progresses via the Index.
